I may be sending home a practice log soon. Be caught up with all your sheets. I'll post page numbers and hopefully the page numebrs soon.

In other news...
Our class is getting a Smartboard!! Google it or check it out on youtube to see this classroom tool in action.

Language Arts: The 100 most common words in English make up over 50% of what we read and write. Practice Superspeed with your parents to become fluent with these words. Discuss the ones you don't know the meaning of.
Show don't tell sentences are due tomorrow.

Math: math sheet handed out today is due tomorrow. I will post them all soon.

Social Studies: Quiz on provinces and capitals is Friday. Learn your continents and oceans as well.

Science: We reviewed all the experiements we've done so far and talked about chemical reactions. You should have brought your crystals home. It is important that everyone knows the procedure for making a crystal and also what they are. (key words-molecules formed in a regular repeating pattern) We tried the hydrogen peroxide and yeast reaction again and got it up to the roof. This is an exothermic reaction.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Language arts: Students should know: synonyms, antonyms, prefixes and suffixes. Everyone was to play superspeed with their parents.

Social Studies: Know your continents - we're getting through lots of basic geography before we dig into the study of Canada's regions.

Science: Kid safe elephant toothpaste. Fun stuff. I'd do the bigger experiment but it requires stronger hydrogen peroxide (6%, 8% or even 30% for big reactions) We made hydrogen peroxide react with yeast ot make a great chemical reaction. (H2O2 forms H2O and O2.) It shot to the roof and you can burn the bubbles. We also mixed borax with water to make crystals. We'll see how they turn out tomorrow. Mr. Maltais did not make a mess in class.

Math: All math pages due tomorrow. Basic facts still need to improve. When will it happen? Practice, practice, practice!

French: Students should know the objects in the classroom, bonjour, comment ca va, etc. Je m'appelle etc. As well as Est-ce que... questions

Monday, September 21, 2009

Social Studies: We had a practice quiz on the capitals. Most people did fairly well. A little more practice is required though. Real quiz on provinces and capitals on Friday.

Math: New place value sheet is due tomorrow. Basic facts as always.

Science: I made some "lava lamps" to show the density of liquids.

Language Arts: My First Three Weeks of School writing assignment was handed in. Thanks, they were very entertaining.

Social Studies: We worked on the computers on the capitals of the provinces and sang the Name the Capitals song.

Language Arts: Due on Monday is a three paragraph piece of writing; My First Three Weeks of school. Remember to make SANDWICHES for paragraphs and PAINT A PICTURE with your words. Make your audience feel something. Your audience is me...No BARE BONES writing.

Math: Place value sheet is due Monday. I will post all three sheets to the Wiki as soon as I can.

We also learned how a chess board is set up, the rules and how the pieces move.

Hello everyone!

We did some excellent writing today in Language Arts. Remember, we're trying to paint a picture in our reader's mind and make them feel something. Use description of the senses...what you feel, hear, see, smell or taste.

Math: We worked quite a lot on addition. No homework other than practicing basic facts.

Social Studies: Learn the capitals of the provinces ASAP (as soon as possible).

Science: Go over in your mind what you learned today about dissolving and tempertature.

Art: You could always practice your shading.

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Language arts: We practiced writing, moving from bare bones sentences to painting a picture. Discussed show don't tell and using our senses to make our reader feel emotion.

Math: place value sheet number 2 is due tomorrow.

Social Studies: We are almost perfect with our provinces. Now for the capitals, continents and oceans.

Science: We talked about mixtures and how to separate them using distilling, decanting, filtering, sieves, floatation, magnets etc. Mr. Maltais did not drop a beaker and cut himself.

Thanks to all the parents who came in to say hello. Thanks also for all the wonderful feedback!

Check out the new files on my Wikispace. Hear our class singing The Parts of Speech song in the Language Arts section.
Hello people of 5C and parents of wonderful children!

Math: Hey...do you know your basic facts? Math worksheet on reading and writing numbers up to one million due tomorrow. You need to understand how to use place value charts, how to read and write big numbers and how to write numbers in expanded notation.

Language arts: Be caught up in DLR up to and including Monday of week 2.Parts of speech song should be mastered.

Social Studies: EVERYONE should be getting 100% on this. Those who didn't get them all right today will do it again tomorrow.

Science: Properties of a solid, liquid and gas. Know what a mixture is and be able to tell me what is the most common gas in air.

Just a reminder http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/ is an excellent site for geography practice as well as for all the other subjects.
What should I be doing for homework? – for the week ending September 11.

Hello students of 5C. I would like you to spend your time at home thinking about what we covered in class, reviewing the information, coming up with questions about it and PRACTICING! Homework assignments will increase as we go on, especially in math.

What you need to be spending time on:

Math: Basic facts – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (0-9) These should be automatic. In a timed test, your goal should be to keep improving until you can answer 30-40 in one minute. I would suggest at least 10 minutes a day practicing these.

Social Studies: So far we’ve been improving our basic geography skills before we study Canada in depth. You should know:
The provinces of Canada
The capitals of the provinces
The continents and oceans (coming up right away…get a head start)
Latitude and longitude and how use them to find a location

Science: Classroom chemistry is a lot of fun. Having a good understanding of the things we talk about in class will help with not only chemistry but also our weather and electricity units later on. You should be able to tell me:

What is chemistry?
What is matter?
What are atoms and molecules?
What is density?
What happens to stuff when you heat it up or cool it? (think soap and balloons in microwave)
What are the states of matter?
How do molecules act in each of the states?

Language arts: Know the 8 parts of speech. Use the narrowing funnel to come up with a story idea. You can also practice your high frequency words.

Art: You can practice blind contour drawing, regular contour drawing, and doodles with patches, concentric lines or pinwheels.

Vocabulary we have used in class:
1. slab
2. dame
3. rhetorical
4. contour
5. matter
6. chemistry
7. atoms
8. molecules
9. solid
10.liquid
11.gas
12.transition
13.table of contents
14.pronunciation guide
15.index
16.mnemonics
17.Social Studies
18.doodle
19.pinwheels
20.concentric

Math: Continue basic facts practice. 10 minutes a day minimum for homework. Place value continues.

Science: Today we made Ivory soap and balloons expand. Words of the day: expand and contract, density, dense.

Language arts: You need to know the 8 parts of speech from the song. We came up with two ideas for a story using the FUNNEL.

Social Studies: We worked with lattitude and longitude. Remember what they are and in which direction they run. We had a practice quiz on the provinces. Yikes! Better learn them!

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

Math: Continue basic facts practice. Place value continues.

Science: Know the meaning of your science words: matter, chemistry, solid, liquid, gas, states of matter, atoms, molecules.
We made a non-Newtonian fluid today. Fun!

Language arts: You need to know the 8 parts of speech from the song. We discussed ideas and the FUNNEL for narrowing ideas for writing.

Social Studies: Same as before. Know the parts of your text, map, table of contents, index, glossary and pronunciation guide. You need to know your provinces and territories. Mnemonic for the provinces: Billy And Sally Made Our Queen Nervous Playing Near Needles. You're Not Nice.
We are having a practice quiz tomorrow!

Saturday, September 5, 2009
