Math: Memorize the measurement song. Know how to find perimeter, area, volume.
Social: Start studying the chart on the regions. Test on it next week.
Science: we didn't have science today but make sure you have completed page 24.
LA: watch a commercial. Ask yourself these questions: Who is the target audience? What is the stated message? What other messages are implied? Should we agree with the message? What advertising techniques do they use in the commercial?
Measurement Song
Perimeter is easy,
you just add up the sides
the length from every corner
to the next one in sight
measurement, measurement
did you get what I meant?
I said measurement
Area is different ‘cause
you have to use your strength
to multi-ulti-ply
width times length
Chorus
Figuring out the volume
Used to keep me up at night
‘Till I was told to multiply
Length and width and height
Chorus

Here's an update on what we've been working on lately.
Language arts:
Spelling: We've done five lists of the most common sight words in English (150 words.) This is done online and we save all the lists. Each student hightlights their errors in a booklet that I keep. There are 30 lists in total and we'll complete them by Christmas. I'll address individual student needs based on common errors in these lists.
Grammar: We do Daily Language Review and a quiz every three weeks based on the work done. We also do paragraph editing and we also correct errors in our own writing.
Writing: We've been doing lots of writing on www.Kidblog.org it is our own class page not open to the public but your child can log you in anytime if you want to see what they've been writing about. We've been working on paragraphing and adding details. Everyone in class should know now how to write a proper paragraph. We've been having trouble with adding details so we're working on that now. We've also practices how to generate ideas by narrowing down broad topics.
Reading: We've been doing reading comprehension activities. The first ones have focused mainly on finding the main idea and using it to increase understanding.
Figurative Language: We've been working on idioms (sayings and expressions) and have been making cartoons that show the literal and figurative meaning. You child can show you thier work on www.toondoo.com.
Math:
We're still working on our first big unit "Number" We've done place value, explanded notation, reading and writing numbers, estimating, addition and subtraction of larger numbers. We worked hard last week to increase our speed with basic facts in addition and this week with subtraction. We're going to have a quiz on Friday on the concepts covered so far, then we're moving on to multiplication and division of larger numbers.
Science: Still working on classroon chemistry. We've done lots of fun experiments but been doing more review lately to ensure we know the material too! Now working on mixtures and solutions, creating carbon dioxide gas through chemical reactions.
Social Studies: After covering general geography, we've moved on to the regions of Canada. We've done a powerpoint on the regions and are now doing a presentation using an online tool called Prezi. Your child can show you theirs by logging in at home.
Art: We've worked on one-point perspective, shading, cartooning and we're starting portrait drawing.
If you can't log in at home and still want to see some of our online work, stop by after school and log in with your child on their school netbook.

Hello parents of 5C.
The first week is done. As I'm sure you're aware, quite a bit of time is spent early establishing routines, getting used to new surroundings and teaching styles. This is going to be a great class and a fun year.
To give your child an advantage you can review the things we're doing in class. They should know the continents and oceans, (provinces and capitals are coming up.) We've been learning geography by using google earth, which you should download onto your computer if you can. It's free and a lot of fun. In math basic facts are always a problem and they should master them. Playing card games, math games, using flashcards, computer games and asking them questions as you drive all help. If you're wondering what we're doing, call or email anytime and I can fill you in. You're not going to see tons of homework (AKA busywork) coming home this year but that doesn't mean they have nothing to learn or do. I'm hoping to assign things that are more creative and get them thinking...homework might also mean extra spelling, writing, reading comprehension work etc. if it's needed. We're studying chemistry in science and you can look at some of those concepts together and repeat some of the experiments we do and discuss them.
That's all for now.Have a great long weekend!

Started a new unit in math. Patterns and relations, the precursor to algebra. No homework mostly because the textbook work has been a little too difficult. We did lots of work online with algebra and number puzzles.
Shape and space (measurement, geometry etc.) test next week.
Finished all our letters from a Loyalist.Worked on geography.
Did the science test on electricity which can be signed.
Continued to work on our new unit, Wetlands.
Spent quite a bit of time on something we can't discuss until Monday.

This week was education week! We taught all the other grade five classes lattice multiplication and they taught us an activity. We learned a new math puzzle, did a 20 questions activity for historical figures or events, learned a French clapping game and rhyme and a French song. We also did the geography challenge and had three students tie for first place in our class.
Due to the many activities this week, the science test will be on Monday.
Math: we have finished our measurement unit. Work on the review sheets - first two pages. Test will be next week.

**New Math and science from today
Over the last couple of weeks, we have been doing lots of work on the computers but not as much paper and pencil work. Here are some things we have been working on:
Students have written a letter as a loyalist in social and should be able to answer these questions:
· Loyalist letter: questions to answer:
o What is the date? Who are you? What is a loyalist? Where are you living? Why are you leaving? What has it been like there? Where will you go? What do you think life will be like in the new place?Use the textbook as a reference source for writing your letter
Math: We have covered these outcomes:
Be ready to teach the lattice method of multiplication tomorrow.
1. Identify 90º angles.
2. Design and construct different rectangles, given either perimeter or area, or both (whole numbers), and make generalizations.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of measuring length (mm) by:
• selecting and justifying referents for the unit mm
• modelling and describing the relationship between mm and cm units, and between mm and m units.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of volume by:
• selecting and justifying referents for cm3 or m3 units
• estimating volume, using referents for cm3 or m3
• measuring and recording volume (cm3 or m3)
• constructing right rectangular prisms for a given volume.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of capacity by:
• describing the relationship between mL and L
• selecting and justifying referents for mL or L units
• estimating capacity, using referents for mL or L
• measuring and recording capacity (mL or L).
6. Describe and provide examples of edges and faces of 3-D objects, and sides of 2-D shapes that are:
• parallel
• intersecting
• perpendicular
• vertical
• horizontal.
7. Identify and sort quadrilaterals, including:
• rectangles
• squares
• trapezoids
• parallelograms
• rhombuses
according to their attributes.
8. Identify and describe a single transformation, including a translation, rotation and reflection of 2-D shapes.
9. Perform, concretely, a single transformation (translation, rotation or reflection) of a 2-D shape, and draw the image.
Science:
They should know what a wetland is, name 5 types and be able to name the three functions of a wetland. Define producer, consumer, decomposer.
Science test on Electricity will be Friday AM.

Happy New Year everyone!
Sorry for no updates the last two days, computer trouble yesterday and a late dimissal today.
Exciting news: the laptops are in! Our class will be a part of the second laptop project at J.E. Lapointe. We will be using a set of computers in the classroom which should allow us to do lots of great things without having to go to the computer lab. Once the new laptops are set up, our class will get the laptops that our school received last year, (currently being used by the junior high.)
Math:
We've been reviewing math concepts this week, making sure that we have mastered addition of large numbers, subtraction of large numbers and two-digit by two-digit multiplication. A letter will be coming home this week regarding our subscription to Mathletics. We are now working on division - practice and make sure to ask questions! Remember: Does McDonald's Serve Burgers?
Language Arts: Mr. Linden's library paragraph - get your character to the front of the bookstore and describe it. Put my writing advice into action and don't be afraid to use banish boring words as a resource to help you write.
Science: make sure you have completed ALL the sheets in "AIM 6." Review weather concepts for upcoming tests and quizzes. Science experiments that were handed out before Christmas will be brought in and demonstrated over the next couple of weeks. Be ready.
Social Studies: We need to work hard to become really familiar with the regions of Canada before we continue on to the history section. Read chapters 1-6 and review!
