Here's an update on what we've been working on lately.

Language arts:
Spelling: We've done five lists of the most common sight words in English (150 words.) This is done online and we save all the lists. Each student hightlights their errors in a booklet that I keep. There are 30 lists in total and we'll complete them by Christmas. I'll address individual student needs based on common errors in these lists.
Grammar: We do Daily Language Review and a quiz every three weeks based on the work done. We also do paragraph editing and we also correct errors in our own writing.
Writing: We've been doing lots of writing on www.Kidblog.org it is our own class page not open to the public but your child can log you in anytime if you want to see what they've been writing about. We've been working on paragraphing and adding details. Everyone in class should know now how to write a proper paragraph. We've been having trouble with adding details so we're working on that now. We've also practices how to generate ideas by narrowing down broad topics.
Reading: We've been doing reading comprehension activities. The first ones have focused mainly on finding the main idea and using it to increase understanding.
Figurative Language: We've been working on idioms (sayings and expressions) and have been making cartoons that show the literal and figurative meaning. You child can show you thier work on www.toondoo.com.

Math:
We're still working on our first big unit "Number" We've done place value, explanded notation, reading and writing numbers, estimating, addition and subtraction of larger numbers. We worked hard last week to increase our speed with basic facts in addition and this week with subtraction. We're going to have a quiz on Friday on the concepts covered so far, then we're moving on to multiplication and division of larger numbers.

Science: Still working on classroon chemistry. We've done lots of fun experiments but been doing more review lately to ensure we know the material too! Now working on mixtures and solutions, creating carbon dioxide gas through chemical reactions.

Social Studies: After covering general geography, we've moved on to the regions of Canada. We've done a powerpoint on the regions and are now doing a presentation using an online tool called Prezi. Your child can show you theirs by logging in at home.

Art: We've worked on one-point perspective, shading, cartooning and we're starting portrait drawing.

If you can't log in at home and still want to see some of our online work, stop by after school and log in with your child on their school netbook.
