The comment from parents always comes up...students say that they have no homework. Here's the real deal:

    1. We have Daily Paragraph Editing for homework each day except Friday. If they get it done in class, that's fine but they should be finished up to week 4 Wednesday.
    2. Daily Language Review is done every day in class but sometimes they fall behind. They should be finished Wednesday of week 8.
    3. Spelling. All the spelling words are online at www.spellingcity.com. They can work from home, then simply upload the saved report to their folder. They should ALL know how to save a report. Follow the link on the right that says "access school files from home" and have them log in using their regular school log in. Then upload the files you've saved at home. Just make sure you put them in the right folder. We are up to list 10 as of today.
    4. Speaking of spelling. We are still unable to spell all the provinces and capitals correctly. I will test this once again on Monday.
    5. Math: They won't have much homework if they work quickly in class but I expect them to practice if they are shaky on a concept. If you look on the wiki, there are several pages on multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100, 1000, 10000. Please do some of these questions with your child to make sure they understand and can do this fluently. This was a problematic concept for many.
    6. Speaking of math...our averages for basic facts are still quite low. They should be practicing this daily for 10-15 minutes. One thing you can do to make a student more successful in math for their school career is making sure their basic facts are automatic.

Thanks for checking the blog. Please email me with any questions or concerns and I will usually respond that day.
    Mr. M

Just a reminder http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/ is an excellent site for geography practice as well as for all the other subjects.
What should I be doing for homework? – for the week ending September 11.

Hello students of 5C. I would like you to spend your time at home thinking about what we covered in class, reviewing the information, coming up with questions about it and PRACTICING! Homework assignments will increase as we go on, especially in math.

What you need to be spending time on:

Math: Basic facts – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division (0-9) These should be automatic. In a timed test, your goal should be to keep improving until you can answer 30-40 in one minute. I would suggest at least 10 minutes a day practicing these.

Social Studies: So far we’ve been improving our basic geography skills before we study Canada in depth. You should know:
    The provinces of Canada
    The capitals of the provinces
The continents and oceans (coming up right away…get a head start)
Latitude and longitude and how use them to find a location

Science: Classroom chemistry is a lot of fun. Having a good understanding of the things we talk about in class will help with not only chemistry but also our weather and electricity units later on. You should be able to tell me:

We have been writing a lot, working on "Mr. Linden's Library." We have started our Bridge to Terabithia novel study and students should be done the work for chapters 1 and 2.

    Science:
We are still working on our Weather unit. Students should be keeping a daily log of the weather. So far we have built 2 different types of anemometers, a weathervane and a barometer. Students should know why we have seasons, what causes wind, the water cycle and more! Learn your cloud types this week.

    Social Studies:
We are working on a project to summarize the regions of Canada. It is a map of Canada with the regions labelled and with three symbols representing the landscape, natural resources and climate of the region. (3 symbols for each one!)

Welcome to Mr. Maltais' blog for 5C!

Welcome to Mr. Maltais' blog. I will try to post what is going on in class as well as homework/assignments on my blog daily. It is a great way to be sure you haven't forgotten to write anything in your agenda. On the right hand side of this page, there is a link to my wikispace where I often place copies of assignments. Sometimes when you are sick or you forget your assignment at school, you can find it there. You can also email me to ask for a specific assignment and I can post it as soon as possible. Take a minute to check it out!
